Origins

An old practice, in a new circle.

Cacao has been part of ritual life in Mesoamerica for thousands of years. Maya and Aztec cultures used it in Ceremonies, offerings and celebrations, and in many places it is still treated with great respect today.

The modern Cacao Ceremony takes that respect into a new setting: a living room, a yoga studio, a retreat or an online call. What stays the same is the heart of it: people come together with a shared intention around a cup of Cacao.

How it works

How a Ceremony is built.

Every Ceremony is different, but most follow the same arc. These are the parts you learn to guide in the training.

Arriving

The space is prepared, people arrive and settle. The facilitator opens the circle and explains what will happen.

Intention

Each participant sets a personal intention. It gives the Ceremony its direction and its meaning.

The cup

Ceremonial Cacao is prepared with care and served. It is drunk slowly and consciously, often in silence.

The journey

Guided meditation, breathwork, music or movement. The facilitator holds the space and the pace.

Sharing

Whoever wants to shares what came up. Listening without judgment is as important as speaking.

Closing

The circle is closed with care, and participants get simple ideas to carry the experience into their days.

Ceremonial Cacao

Not the cocoa from the supermarket.

Ceremonial Cacao is made from whole Cacao beans, minimally processed, without the cocoa butter removed. It is thicker, richer and more bitter than hot chocolate.

Choosing good, fairly sourced Cacao and preparing the right dose is part of the craft. It is one of the first things you learn in the training.

The facilitator

The person who holds the space.

A facilitator prepares the Cacao and the room, guides the group through each part of the Ceremony and makes sure everyone feels safe. It is a role built on presence, preparation and care for people.

Anyone can learn it. Our students are coaches, yoga teachers, therapists, and many people who simply love bringing others together.

Questions

Common questions about Cacao Ceremonies.

Do I need experience to join or to learn to lead a Ceremony?

No. The training starts at the very beginning, with the Cacao itself.

Can a Cacao Ceremony be held online?

Yes. Many facilitators hold online Ceremonies, and leading them is part of the training.

Is Cacao suitable for everyone?

Cacao contains theobromine and a little caffeine. People with heart conditions, who are pregnant or take certain medication should check with their doctor first. A good facilitator asks about this before every Ceremony.

How long does a Ceremony take?

Usually between one and three hours, depending on the group and the practices used.
